Artist Matthew Mack was born in New Jersey and spent his early years in the U. S. Air Force as a combat pilot. He was decorated in World War II after completing 55 combat missions over Europe. After 20 years of active duty and having attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, Matthew retired in 1962.
He studied painting in Germany from 1958 to 1960 with the noted German artist, Ernst Krupp, of the Munich Art Academy. Matthew also attended the Famous Artist School of Westport, Connecticut and the Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore. He painted full-time until the age of ninety-one.
A contemporary American impressionist, Matthew always favored Plein Air ( outdoor ) painting of historic sites and landscapes. His watercolors and oil paintings have been exhibited and collected through many galleries throughout Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D. C..
Matthew's son, Robert Mack, is also an artist, photographer, and filmmaker. His photography received a major exhibition at The Balimore Museum of Art and his work is included in their permanent collection..
Matthew maintained a studio in the historic town of Lewes, Delaware near the Atlantic ocean and also a studio in Rockville, Maryland.
